English as an Additional Language or Dialect
At our school, we proudly support students who are learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). Through targeted programs, including the New Arrivals Program, we help students develop their English skills, build confidence, and succeed in both learning and social settings. Our approach values each child’s cultural background while giving them the tools to thrive in their education.
English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
Many of our students come from rich cultural and language backgrounds, and some are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). Our EAL/D programs provide extra support to help these students develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing English.
Students in the EAL/D program may experience a combination of small group lessons and individual support tailored to their language proficiency. They engage in activities designed to build vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and develop comprehension skills. Lessons often include interactive tasks, such as storytelling, role-playing, and collaborative projects, which encourage practical use of English in a supportive environment. The program also integrates cultural learning to help students feel connected and confident in their new community.
Improving English language proficiency enables students to participate more confidently in all areas of learning, express themselves clearly, and build strong connections with others. With the right support, EAL/D students not only succeed academically but also thrive socially, contributing their unique perspectives and strengths to our diverse school community.
New Arrivals Program
For students who are new to Australia and just beginning to learn English, we offer the New Arrivals Program. This program provides intensive English language support during the early stages of settlement, helping students adjust to school life and build confidence in everyday communication.
In the New Arrivals Program, students experience a welcoming and nurturing environment where they can gradually develop essential language skills through focused lessons. They receive help with understanding classroom routines, making friends, and participating in school activities. The program includes language-rich experiences such as games, songs, and hands-on learning to make English accessible and engaging. Additionally, students are supported in building their confidence to communicate their needs, ideas, and feelings both inside and outside the classroom.
The focus is on developing the skills necessary for students to fully engage in mainstream classroom learning as soon as possible. With this strong foundation, new arrivals are well-prepared to succeed both academically and socially, while feeling supported and valued as part of our school community.
